Analysis of a Trailer- Ronnie and Danielle (BBC ONE Trailer)

EastEnders- Ronnie and Danielle (BBC ONE Trailer)

EastEnders- Ronnie and Danielle (BBC ONE Trailer)

The trailer is about Ronnie finding out that Danielle is her daughter with the side story of Peggy Mitchell getting married, all this happens on the day of the wedding. Ronnie’s long lost daughter Danielle tries to tell Ronnie that she is her daughter but Ronnie is in denial therefore chucks Danielle out of the pub.
This trailer attracts the audience because the truth comes out on a wedding day whereas it makes it more dramatic for the audience to watch. Throughout the previous episodes Danielle was questioned by the audience who she is, and this dramatic ending takes the audiences curiosity and watch the episode for this trailer. The trailer shows Ronnie slapping Roxy where the audience wants to know why Ronnie slaps her sister. The slapping and the real life situations persuades the audience to want to watch it because mainly women are shown in this trailer convincing that something dramatic will happen for Roxy to find her daughter but not know that Danielle is her daughter until later when she finds Danielle’s necklace in a Champaign glass where she has the exact one for it.
Analysis of the Trailer:
The camera first starts of with a fade in on Danielle putting a necklace into a campaign class then the camera changes to a close up to show her facial expression looking down and upset, this communicates that she is getting rid of something meaningful to her and that she is up set about something, the audience feels sympathetic towards this character because something is going wrong already on someone’s wedding day for her.  Then the screen goes black communicating that the calmness of being sad has disappeared, this proves that the atmosphere will changed within the trailer either to a good one or to a bad one making the audience feel curious and questioning about what will happen next.

Danielle is in a pub decorated with wedding decorations communicating the idea of a special occasioning; a wedding. She is wearing a neutral coloured dress and a cardigan hinting to the audience that she is also invited to the wedding. The colour of the dress sends a message that she is feeling neutral emotions and relaxed even though she is upset, this makes the audience feel as though she is still like a little girl by the way that she is dressed so young in a party dress.

An over the shoulder shot on of Ronnie walking away from Peggy in slow motion indicating that she is walking away from reality, because she has no idea that Danielle is her daughter. This communicates curiosity to the audience and the audience being seen as the ‘peeping tom’ knowing all things before the characters have known it themselves. This makes the audience feel excited that they know all knowing things because the characters do not know anything this makes the audience feel superior. A voice over connects the three shots of Ronnie walking away , a medium shot of Danielle and Danielle shouting at Ronnie telling her that Ronnie is her ‘mother’ has been edited to cut to the chase, letting the audience in to the highlights of what will happen that week in Eastenders, allowing the audience to build interest already into the episode before it has been shown yet, this makes the audience want to watch this episode, also the curiosity of the audience is being answered of who Danielle really is building an audience for the Danielle.

A medium shot of Peggy in a wedding dress, walking down the isle representing love and binding of two people sends a secret message that Danielle and Ronnie have always been in a binding which they both never knew. The wedding causes tension because on a happy day Ronnie discovers that her daughter is Danielle and she is in shock, showing the audience that she isn’t in belief that her daughter has been near her the whole time.

A close up of Danielle hiding half way behind a door communicates that she is scared and feels insecure, this makes the audience feel disappointed because she is meant to be happy that she is near her mother but yet again her mother doesn’t believe that she is her daughter.

Ronnie is wearing a rose pink dress when she chucks Danielle out of the pub, a long shot of Danielle and Ronnie switching to medium shots of Ronnie then Danielle have been edited together show both characters emotions. The audience is taken into both of the characters emotions, Danielle; disappointed and betrayed. Ronnie; Upset and feels lied too. The trailer wants to portray the audience’s emotions and thoughts by making them feel one thing but yet another between the two characters by changing shots/scenes really quickly in different order of which they happen in. This confuses the audience to feel forced to watch therefore this trailer has a huge effect on the audience.

The song used for this trailer is from maroon 5 ‘she will be loved’ communicating a secret message to the audience that ‘she will be loved’ to Danielle. This message goes directly to Danielle, the last shot is a medium shot of Ronnie finding Danielle’s necklace this communicates that Danielle was telling the truth and that she should ‘be loved’ by Ronnie. This makes the audience feel sad and sympathetic towards Danielle. Therefore not only the audience is all knowing and powerful, Ronnie has also discovered the truth.

Analysis of a Title Sequence

Eastenders Title Sequence

The Eastenders Title first begins with the camera looking down at the sea indicating life, this communicates that life has only one color. The audience is attracted by this because blue is a very common color and, therefore everyone is equal.
The camera zooms out in a much paced speed whereas the image of London was spinning round where the audience can see the river Thames and the Millennium Dome in the middle. The camera zooming out in a fast pace represents life as overall; age, growth. Therefore communicates the idea that life is too short making the audience feels the need to live life to the fullest. The River Thames represents the plotting of life where there are many different bumpy roads and you can go from everything being good to turning to bad, this represents to the audience that not just in reality there are bumpy roads but also in a soap opera making the audience feel as if they are watching just another set of people in the real world and not just from TV.
The Eastenders soundtrack begins with a rhythmic beat and goes straight into the song, where the audience will find it recognizable from the beat, the keyboard playing the rhythm, and a simple drum kit. Therefore whenever the audience hears this Eastenders soundtrack they will know straight away that Eastenders is on, representing that the audience is tied in with the serial.
The camera after swirling and zooming out for at least 24 seconds, it stops and showing a full image of London and the river Thames cutting the two areas in the middle, then the ‘Eastenders’ title fades in to the image showing the recognizable name and sequence which has been around since Eastenders first began. This communicates to the audience that Eastenders is a very recognizable trade in the UK soap opera listing therefore the audience is built meaning that every time the title sequence is shown the audience will rush to the TV to watch Eastenders to watch an episode full of drama where the audience is seen as the voyeur.

Heightened sense of Drama, Other Dramatic Moments and Storylines

There are many different moments in Eastenders and these are few of the different types of moments which I have chosen.

Heightened sense of Drama

This small clip from Eastenders is from a new years special where Tiffany Mitchell dies on new years eve. The death of Tiffany Mitchell is caused by Grant Mitchell because Grant didn't give their child back to  Tiffany and she ran after him to get their child back and a car ran her over. Tiffany and Grant in this clip has a small argument where the audience knows where it will lead too. Even though the audience knew where it would lead to they were still so suprised because it happened on new years eve after 12 O'clock.

Dramatic Moments

The little clip of Little Mo punching Trevor is based on; when Trevor wants to get back with Little Mo and she refuses him, Trevor changes his ways from apologizing to acting evil again towards her then Billy gets involved to defend Little Mo where they end up just about to fight Little Mo stops them, she and Billy tell Trevor the truth about being together then he calls her 'pathetic' where she gets angry ad punches Trevor who is her husband in the face. Little Mo is shown to be able to defend herself towards her Former husband at the time after all of his bullying. This sends the audience a message that no matter how small or vulnerable you are, you can always defend yourself.

Lighter Moments

In this clip Phil and Max scare Ian as a practical joke for what he had done to them saying that a spare piece for a Mercedes was a gun. They had scared him by catching him in a room alone in a bed and threatening him to later prove that the spare piece in a cloth was not a gun. This made this specific moment very light to entertain the audience because they know that Ian Beale and Phil Mitchell cannot put up with each other let alone be friends therefore they irritate each other showing that this is the only way that they are able to get along by irritating each other.
